Tragedy on Geist
On the evening of June 27, a young man on a boat with some friends jumped or fell into the water. When he did not surface, his friends summoned rescuers. The man's body was recovered on June 29 after an intensive search. Law enforcement officials are still investigating the accident, but this remains clear. The victim was not wearing a life vest/personal floatation device (PFD). Had he been, it might possibly have saved his life.

The Geist Lake Coalition encourages all boaters to not only have U.S. Coast Guard approved PFDs aboard all watercraft as required by law, but to wear them while in the boat. This is especially true of children. Anyone operating or riding on a personal watercraft (PWC) such as a JetSki or Waverunner must wear a PFD. This is also true of anyone being towed behind a boat or PWC such as skiers, wakeboarders or tubers.

A PFD could save your life or the life of a loved one when the unexpected happens. Please make sure that you have enough properly sized PFDs on your boat for you and your passengers. And encourage your passengers to wear their PFDs when on the Lake.

Accident Report
In June, two bass boats collided on Geist. The operator of one boat was hospitalized with facial cuts and lacerations. Both boats were severely damaged. This personal injury accident was the result of navigation rules being disregarding. The boats were approaching each other head on. Navigation rules require both boats to give way by moving to their right (starboard). One boat correctly maneuvered to starboard while the other boat went left (port) resulting in the collision.

Please familiarize yourself with navigation rules. A summary of the rules can be found in the Geist Lake Safety Guide and Map which is available at the Marina, launch ramp and gas pumps or at www.geistlake.org. You can also contact the Department of Natural Resources for a booklet of boating regulations or check their web site at www.dnr.in.gov.

DNR Boating Safety Tip
DNR Officer John Gano would like to remind residents that it is essential for all watercraft operating after sunset and before sunrise to have working lights. This includes two bow lights (one red, one green) and a stern light (white light, elevated for maximum visibility). DNR has stopped a number of boaters on Geist for failure to have lights on or lights that were inoperable. Please keep your lights in working order and always carry spare light bulbs in your boat.

2003 Thunder on the Dam Fireworks

Thunder on the Dam, our 4th of July fireworks celebration, was spectacular even with the rain delay. The record monsoons of July 2003 nearly caused a cancellation of the show. With a deluge of rain from 6:00-7:30PM, our intrepid pyrotechnicians had to keep all of the fireworks in a truck on the dam to prevent damage. This left them scrambling to get everything set up after the skies cleared. They managed to accomplish the task (which usually takes an entire afternoon) in a little over 2 hours. Our thanks to Tom Woody and his crew for their Herculean efforts to ensure that the 2003 Thunder on the Dam show was not the first cancellation in 17 years.

Special Recognition
The Geist Lake Coalition would like to extend a special thanks to the Geist Harbours Property Owners Association (GHPOA) for their support of the 2003 Thunder on the Dam fireworks. GHPOA sponsored the fireworks display for the past 17 years before passing the baton for the event to the Geist Lake Coalition this year. The members of the GHPOA board were instrumental in ensuring that this great tradition on Geist continued to be one of the most popular events on the Lake. The Coalition is grateful for GHPOA's help and support.

Thunder on the Dam receives no financial support from any government agency. It is solely and completely funded by our sponsors and contributors.
